☔ In cloudy or rainy weather
Surabaya Indoor & sheltered
When clouds arrive, Surabaya offers real treasures to explore under cover. The city has rich museums and indoor sites that will tell its tumultuous history much better than any guide.
- 🏛️ House of Sampoerna – Museum dedicated to the history of kretek, guided tour included, approx. 1.5 hours, free entry. Open year-round.
- 🚢 Monumen Kapal Selam (Monkasel) – Submarine museum accessible from the inside, approx. 1 hour, fee ~20,000 IDR. Ideal outside the dry season.
- 🏛️ 10 November Museum (Tugu Pahlawan Museum) – Dedicated to the Battle of Surabaya, 1–2 hours, modest entry fee. Must-see in any weather.
- 🛍️ Tunjungan Plaza – Iconic shopping mall, cafes, restaurants, shops, welcome air conditioning. All day as desired.
- 🎨 Galeri Surabaya – Municipal art gallery in a colonial building, free entry, 45 min. Soothing and cultural atmosphere.
Practical tip: House of Sampoerna is best booked in the morning to avoid school groups. Bring a light raincoat for travel between sites.
Additional tip: Combine Monkasel and the 10 November Museum by taxi in less than half an hour for a complete historical day in the rain.
