☔ In overcast or rainy weather
Hallstatt's indoor treasures
Hallstatt is full of sheltered sites that tell 7,000 years of history and keep you busy for several hours, even in the rain.
- ⛏️ Salzwelten Hallstatt (Salt Mine) – fascinating guided underground tour, 1.5 to 2 hours, about 30 € per adult, open all year (access by funicular)
- 🏛️ World Heritage Museum (Welterbezentrum) – history of the Hallstatt civilization, 1 hour, about 10 €, ideal in gray weather
- 💀 Beinhaus (Ossuary) of the Catholic church – chapel of ornate skulls unique in Europe, 20 min, 1.50 €, open all year
- ⛪ Catholic Church of the Nativity – Gothic architecture, free, 20 min
- 🎨 Local artisan galleries and workshops – glassware, jewelry, wood carving, covered stroll under the village arcades
Practical tip: Book the salt mine absolutely in advance online at salzwelten.at, especially from June to August. Morning slots (9 AM-11 AM) are the least busy.
Tip: Start with the mine in the early morning (funicular access from 9 AM), go back down for lunch in the village, then visit the museum in the afternoon.
